We serve unmet legal needs of veterans and the elderly
From our senior partners to our new associates, Saul Ewing LLP acknowledges and embraces the responsibility of each lawyer to provide pro bono publico service to those who cannot otherwise afford legal representation. Recognizing the growing severity of the unmet legal needs of the poor and disadvantaged, Saul Ewing launched “We’re All In,” a firm wide pro bono project. Our firm has pledged to give a minimum of 25 hours per attorney to help meet the overwhelming needs of the elderly and veterans for legal assistance.
We provide both transactional and litigation services, addressing a wide range of issues related to advance personal planning, housing, elder abuse, consumer protection and predatory lending, denials by the Veterans Benefits Administration, problems with job re-entry after active military service, Social Security, and other public benefits and more.
Recognition for our pro bono work
Saul Ewing is well-recognized for providing pro bono legal services in the Mid-Atlantic region. The firm is a seven-time recipient of the Philadelphia VIP Chancellor’s Award for its active participation in handling pro bono cases. In 2002, one of our partners received the prestigious Louis J. Goffman Award, which is given annually to one Pennsylvania attorney by the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation in recognition of significant pro bono contributions. And in 1997, the firm received the Maryland State Bar Herbert S. Garten Special Project Award for its outstanding pro bono services.
Encouraging pro bono and community service
We have a standing Pro Bono Committee, consisting of partners and associates, which manages the firm's pro bono practice. Under its direction, our attorneys undertake representations through many referral agencies, such as the Dauphin County Bar Association Pro Bono Program, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, Maryland Bar Foundation, Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP), Philadelphia Support Center for Child Advocates, SeniorLAW Center in Philadelphia, Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, Lawyers Clearinghouse, American Civil Liberties Union, various veterans' organizations and senior citizen advocacy groups. In addition to the time they devote to pro bono matters, Saul Ewing attorneys have taken important leadership positions in many of these organizations as well.
We encourage our attorneys to support our signature projects or take cases in their area of interest. We provide training and support to handle those cases. Attorneys receive billable hours credit for the first 25 hours of pro bono service and are recognized for additional pro bono time.
